Reading
In Early Years and Key Stage 1, phonics learning develops reading skills that are progressively build upon. From Reception onwards, children receive a school reading book to read at home.
In classrooms, reading is a high priority. Time is spent ensuring that children enjoy and are inspired to read, with engaging class books, classroom book corners and text-based writing units. Children read with a school adult once a week in Reception and Key Stage 1 and once every two weeks in Key Stage 2.
The skills of reading: understanding vocabulary, inferring, predicting, explaining, recalling, and summarising, are taught at small group-level in Key Stage 1 and through a whole class approach in Key Stage 2.
