The 2014 national curriculum for science aims to ensure that all pupils:

• develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
• develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
• are equipped with the scientific skills required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future. We understand that it is important for lessons to have a skills-based focus, and that the knowledge can be taught through this

At Tannery Drift First School, our primary goal is to foster curiosity and interest in the sciences among all our pupils. We understand the significance of developing scientific enquiry and as such, our curriculum provides hands-on, investigative, and stimulating experiences that align with the national curriculum.

Our aim is to establish a solid foundation of working scientifically skills embedded within each lesson throughout their time at our school, enabling them to confidently apply these skills in subsequent settings. Furthermore, we prioritise the explicit and progressive teaching of key scientific vocabulary, allowing our children to effectively communicate their understanding and encourage them to ask questions and actively participate in finding answers.

We adapt our science curriculum to suit our local context including the flora and fauna common on chalk grassland as well as considering local industry. We strive to inform our pupils about the natural world and foster a sense of responsibility towards the environment and themselves.

We aim to showcase the practical application of science in various professions, breaking down stereotypes and demonstrating the relevance of science in a wide range of career opportunities.

By nurturing curiosity, developing skills to work scientifically and instilling a sense of care for the world, we aim to empower our children with the knowledge and understanding necessary to become informed and responsible citizens who appreciate the value and significance of science in their lives.
