Music is highly valued at Tannery Drift School – children participate in weekly singing assemblies and have opportunities to play a musical instrument throughout their time here. Frequent performances, to each other and the wider school community, allow children to showcase and celebrate their musical talents.

Our music curriculum is unique to our school, taught in discrete music lessons, which feed into our singing assemblies. We aim to ensure sure that children are confident at writing music as well as playing instruments and singing.

New instruments and resources are regularly purchased to further children’s’ learning and our curriculum is exciting, challenging and varied. 

We have visiting musicians, such as the Royston Town Band and Megson that come and perform live music for to experience and be in awe of. These opportunities allow us to learn, first hand, about different instruments and the music they create. The Friends of Tannery Drift are very kind and support music in our school by funding resources and visitors.

Singing

• Each week we have a whole school singing assembly where we learn songs in a range of styles. We sing simple unaccompanied sings to help us focus on singing in tune and also sing more complicated songs with fun musical accompaniments.
• At Christmas Years 1- 4 sing in a Carol Service at the local Church. Groups of children also attend local nursing homes to bring joy to the elderly.
• Every class has a termly assembly where they perform to their family and the rest of the school.
• Each child in the school is involved in a musical production every year.
• We sing in class to support us with other areas of the curriculum, e.g. singing times tables, songs about nouns, songs from around the world and counting songs.

Music Lessons

• Nursery, Reception and Year 1 learn music through their open-ended provision and occasional singing sessions led by Mrs France.
• Years 2, 3 and 4 have weekly music lessons with Mrs France. 
• As we learn to understand written music, we practise these skills by writing music and creating our own compositions.
• Regular opportunities to perform our compositions in class are great fun and a chance to share our musical ideas.
• We are lucky to have lots of specialist music teachers (piano, woodwind, brass and strings).
• Children perform in a special summer music concert where they can share their hard work with the rest of the school.
• Year 3 children have whole class guitar lessons with a specialist teacher for a term.
