Geography
At Tannery Drift, children are encouraged to develop a sound understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it. The geography curriculum enables children to develop key knowledge and skills that can be applied across the curriculum and transferred into real life experiences that they will draw upon for the rest of their lives. Geography is an investigative subject, which develops an understanding of concepts, knowledge and skills.
We aim to inspire children’s curiosity and fascination about the world and people within it; to promote the children's interest and understanding of diverse places, people, resources as well as natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth's key physical and human processes.
In the Early Years children learn about Geography under the heading ‘Understanding the World’. They will share and develop their personal experiences and gain a sense of belonging through learning about their community. They will also use stories to think about people from different cultures and places around the world.
Pupils in Key Stage 1 develop their knowledge about the world, the United Kingdom, and their locality. They enjoy discovering more about their local environment and develop their curiosity of the world by making comparisons to other countries and cultures and are given opportunities to develop their enquiry skills both inside and outside the classroom.
In Key Stage 2, pupils extend their knowledge and understanding of the world to include Europe, North and South America. They investigate environments, people and places and begin to explore similarities and differences, from their findings. They also explore human and physical Geography and the impact they have on the world.
