Physical Education

At Tannery Drift First School we value the importance of a healthy lifestyle and therefore strive to engage all pupils in their physical education. We were delighted to be one of the Hertfordshire schools selected to pioneer the Daily Mile in May 2016, and we have now incorporated this into our school curriculum. We are proud to share our many sporting achievements, including our recent School Games Platinum Level Kitemark 2021 - 2023 accreditation.

PE teaching consistently ensures that all our pupils have a positive, confident and committed attitude towards their physical education. Through carefully planned teaching sessions, that follow the National Curriculum, we enable children to make excellent progress in their physical development and experience a range of sports to fuel their enthusiasm. Children are encouraged to uphold good sportsmanship at all times, whether they are representing themselves, their team or the school.

In the Early Years, we:

  • Build children’s strength, stamina, balance and co-ordination.
  • Develop a range of large and small movements which can be controlled.
  • Instil confidence in children’s own physical abilities.
  • Promote independence through decision and choice to keep them healthy and safe.

In Key Stage 1 and 2, we:

  • Deliver twice weekly high-quality sessions to support improvements in children’s physical literacy, social, emotional, and physical wellbeing.
  • Create positive experiences by ensuring that physical activity and competition is designed to reflect the motivation, competence and confidence of all children.
  • Create positive experiences that support the character development of targeted young people.
  • Incorporate our school values; Teamwork, Passion, Respect, Self- Belief, Honesty, and Determination into each lesson.

We have a good-sized hall equipped with climbing frames, ropes, agility apparatus and benches. We also have a very well-resourced PE storage area with an extensive range of equipment for teaching sessions, outdoor playground games, gymnastics and dance.

Three boys play a game of football on the school field, one of the boys is about to make a back pass to his team mate.

Tannery Drift is delighted to be part of the School Sports Partnership, and with their support we are able to organise for professional agencies to teach curriculum programmes in cricket, golf and tag rugby as well as extracurricular sessions in tennis and football. We also have regular opportunities to compete in North Herts Cross country championships, summer athletics, Schoolympics, KS1and KS2 multi-skills festivals, speed stacking festivals and inter-school games tournaments. As well as curriculum support the partnership also offers professional development for staff through training courses and subject leader cluster meetings.
