In Year 1 we have two classes: Owls and Pelicans. Owls are taught by Mrs Presland and their teaching assistants are Miss Clark and Mrs Leggett; Pelicans are taught by Miss Johnson and their teaching assistant is Miss Fenton.

In Year 1, books and stories are used to explore children’s own experiences, emotions and topics which incorporate the Zones of Regulation and many areas of the curriculum such as PSHE, Geography, History, Science and Art.

The classroom environment offers continuous provision opportunities throughout the day, as the children learn independently. Every day, the children use the different areas of the classroom, such as construction, small world, investigation, creative and mark making to consolidate their learning, develop new skills and to challenge themselves. Our children always work with a purpose in Year 1, persevering when trying something new and striving to do their best.

Year 1 children also have access to their own outdoor area where they can use their imaginations in the mud kitchen, develop maths concepts and phonics skills, hunt for signs of nature in our flower beds and bug hotel, as well as act out ideas in the role play area.
